Note: These are my opinions and views on this game, I am aware that this is an open beta and that this game is still incomplete. I do not mean to disrespect or hate on this game as it still has a long way to go to being finished, so if your easily offended or harbor some nerd rage about this topic feel free to leave a comment at the bottom.

Over the past few days I have been playing Final Fantasy 14 to simply find out if this is going to be my next big time sink. Initially I was excited and I could not wait to play this new installment, boy was I in for a letdown. This game had so much potential but just does not deliver to the hype its pumping out. Just getting into the open beta has been half the battle and things have been a mess all over.

The Lack of content, crashes, primitive interface, clunky game play, not enough mobs, not enough quests, poor map, translation errors, poor chat system, poor macro system, lack of skills, lack of items\vendors, and lack of support. For example when you hit the help button nothing happens, when you alt tab the game crashes randomly making it hard to look things up.

This game just does not seem complete, I almost wish that they would take this game out of beta and delay the launch a few more months just to iron out the bugs and inject some more content. Is it worth the $70+ monthly fee, to me that answer is currently no. But I wanted this game to be good so much, I had a lot of hope coming in but those feelings have since been extinguished and replaced by disappointment. I’m not saying this game is the worst I’ve ever played but damn it’s trying hard. Don’t get me wrong this game looks and sounds Amazing, and is vastly ahead of anything else on the market in terms of graphics in MMOS but this simply is just not enough to sway me away from saying that overall my experience has been poor.

Beta key mess!

(deep breath) sigh……… Ok it took me 6 hours of spamming an unlisted Square Enix beta page to get a key, The email link sent out was not functional the entire night and was found to be false, but a link listed on several forums around the net seemed to work. That was just one of the many problems that came up during the awkward and painful night for many fans seeking an open beta key. This was one of the worst handled opening beta rollout I have ever seen.

To get a key you must spam a page that says “There are no more keys at this time.” And if you continue to spam this page you will get a key……ya about that……and it worked, I got a key! This is stupid I’m sorry but I think sending out codes via email weeks before the open beta would take place would have been a better idea.

Here is how I got a key: 10 steps

Step one – Go to unlisted page found on un-official forums and open the link found like 50 times

Step two – Spam your username and password for at least 6 hours seems to be random on time

Step three – Ignore all signs of maintenance if prompted use F5 then enter your info and hit Enter

Step four – Keep spamming! Till you get a success page!

Step Five – Enter your info agree to the paper work and confirm.

Step Six – Wait for email containing code *takes about 10 mins

Step Seven – Take code in email and login to your master Square Enix account from here go to services and add Final Fantasy 14, when prompted for code put in your beta code.

Step Eight – Download the Client which if you did ahead of time you should be good to go

Step Nine – Patch and adjust your settings in the Config.exe found in the Final fantasy directory on your local hard drive aka where you done the install c:\program files\Square Enix\Final fantasy 14 \ ß here*

Step Ten – Login and Play!

My guess is that Square did not foresee the thousands of requests all at once and there servers just were not enough to handle the load. Square commented saying that “There is was an error in settings and this led to various problems on our registration system.”

Downloader pain

The game installer works fine it’s the downloader that fails 90% of the time. In an age of ISP’s blocking Bit torrent traffic this idea of an all Bit torrent distribution model is unwise and unfair to consumers. There are so many problems with doing mass downloads and patches via this client it’s no wonder people are finding other ways to get the game and its patches. Many users are having problems with Firewalls, routers, ISP’s, local software, anti-virus software and local settings that affect the downloader’s ability to gain access to other seeds and thus download the game. Another issue found is that the game runs with a funky Low priority cpu usage setting which causes random crashes on slower machines. ATI users are reporting random crashes when running in various modes, the most common is DX compatible device not found on system.

Character Creation

I rather enjoyed the character creation screen but It would really help if there was more information about it and how to build your character in there. It was very confusing at points and flushing out the pros and cons of many of the settings was very difficult. But overall fun and bug free with the exception of the Lobbies which kept going when flooded by players.

Interface issues

It’s the same interface from FF11….. just saying it looks like you phoned this one in…

Clunky, slow and counter intuitive the interface crawls around like a slug on a salt covered sidewalk. It is ugly, pixel ridden poor photo shopped and lacking color. The fact that you have to click on the icons then surf a menu then dig deeper and deeper and deeper to get to something useful is frustrating and time consuming. Poor labeling and poor layout are in plain view and need to be desperately fixed. It is actually hard to equip and un-equip items and weapons, even more of pain to check the stats on those items say to compare them. Both Aion and World of warcraft are miles ahead in interface, learn Square LEARN!

Gameplay or lack there of

Slow and lacking some sort of feedback that better engages the player. Fishing and mining were more enjoyable than combat overall and that’s because you have to pay attention. The combat is slow clunky and very poor overall. I found myself spending 5 minutes just finding a mob to kill due to lack of mobs. And when I found a mob I could engage I had to guess if I could take that mob by myself well turns out that most mobs by starting towns are bad asses that 3 shot you as a tank, great thing they did not implement some sort of difficulty gauge. If I knew I could kill that mob I fought it, by spamming the “1” key that’s it, no defending, no thinking, no positioning just press 1. Its dry and you can get a group to press 1 with but that means messing with that horrible interface. Basically your first day you will be learning dying and getting lost, your second day will be doing 1 quest aka kill 3 things then nothing after that. I hope there is more to do in the retail release.

Lost and still not found

The map is so bad, it’s the worst map I’ve used in an online game ever, I’d rather have a paper map than use that garbage. All I can say is look at World of Warcrafts maps and cry because Final fantasy 14’s maps are horrid.

Music to my ears

The tunes and sound effects in this game are top notch, I could listen to this MMOs music all day unlike the sound track in Aion or WoW which get dry very quickly. Not much else to say here, you won’t be disappointed this games soundtrack.

Eye candy

This game is pretty; this game looks years ahead of Aion and Decades ahead of WoW. Once you see it you can’t un-see it, but if you have old hardware you’re going to feel the lag. I just love the visuals and I really wish they would fix the other things I don’t like, cause if they did I know what I would be spending my free time doing.

Overall

This game is still new and has a long road ahead of it, and I hope they fix it, cause I want to love it but just can’t look past the clunk and junk. This game is fun if you can look past it’s issues but if you can’t just don’t drop the money on the pre-order quite yet and wait to see what happens to the game when the PS3 version drops in like 4 months.

These are all shows that are already out on DVD but for some reason are several months behind on the Blu-ray release. The person that actually created this post brings up some good points and the video its self adds a somewhat convincing opinion as to ‘why’ it is believed.

Why do the Japanese draw themselves as white? You see that especially in manga and anime.

As it turns out, that is an American opinion, not a Japanese one. The Japanese see anime characters as being Japanese. It is Americans who think they are white. Why? Because to them white is the Default Human Being.

If I draw a stick figure, most Americans will assume that it is a white man. Because to them that is the Default Human Being. For them to think it is a woman I have to add a dress or long hair; for Asian, I have to add slanted eyes; for black, I add kinky hair or brown skin. Etc.

The Other has to be marked. If there are no stereotyped markings of otherness, then white is assumed.

Americans apply this thinking to Japanese drawings. But to the Japanese the Default Human Being is Japanese! So they feel no need to make their characters “look Asian”. They just have to make them look like people and everyone in Japan will assume they are Japanese – no matter how improbable their physical appearance.

You see the same thing in America: After all, why do people think Marge Simpson is white? Look at her skin: it is yellow. Look at her hair: it is a blue Afro. But the Default Human Being thing is so strong that lacking other clear, stereotyped signs of being either black or Asian she defaults to white.

When you think about it there is nothing particularly white about how anime characters look:

• huge round eyes – no one looks like that, not even white people (even though that style of drawing eyes does go back to Betty Boop).
• yellow hair – but they also have blue hair and green hair and all the rest. Therefore hair colour is not about being true to life.
• small noses – compared to the rest of the world whites have long noses that stick out.
• white skin – but many Japanese have skin just as pale and white as most White Americans.

Besides, that is not how the Japanese draw white or even Chinese people. The otherness of foreigners is clearly marked by physical stereotypes – just as Americans do with people of colour. In anime White Americans are stereotyped as having yellow hair, blue eyes and a long or big nose:

Gone are the big round eyes and the strange hair colours. Because those things have nothing to do with whiteness.

Note that the Japanese drop the markings of otherness if the action is set in a foreign land, like China or America. In that case the characters are drawn in the regular anime style. Because for that story the Default Human Being is understood.

Some Americans, even some scholars, will argue against this view of anime. They want to think the Japanese worship America or worship whiteness and use anime to prove it. But they seem to be driven more by their own racism and nationalism than anything else.

The source can be read here

While I think a interesting point is being made, at the end of the day it doesn’t terribly matter what stereo type said character fits by their appearance. In most cases the show will actually mention where the character lives and even a bit of information on where he/she/it is from — assuming if it is even a lifeform or item of earth. Many times a show will take place in a non-existent town or city on a unknown planet. I personally view Anime and Manga as a form of art and the characters are designed and created to fit what the artist imagines and creates them as.

A few days ago I posted an article about the rumors floating around about the surplus XP system, well these rumors are only found to be some what true but mostly lacking solid facts. I recently found an article that pretty much points out exactly what my thoughts on the system are. Here is short clip from the top of the article and a link to the full article. Many thanks to some honest beta players and Giuseppe Nelva of “This is my Joystick.com” for bringing some truth to the table. I understand that many gamers are rather upset about this system if you are one of them please read the linked article it best explains the system and does it honestly.

Link here please read me!

In the last few days some “information” about the so called “fatigue” system in the upcoming MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV by Square Enix (you can also read my in-depth hands on article), stirred a real uproar across the internet.

A few misleading articles by the otaku site Sankaku Complex, full of mistranslations and omissions that seemed quite intentional, given the past hate-filled articles by the site on anything pertaining Square Enix. These misconceptions spread like wildfire and gave the general audience a quite warped vision of the system and the game. Unfortunately even more sanctioned websites decided to approach the matter in a sensationalistic way, also omitting some crucial information.

With September creeping up on us, so does the release of many great games. Just one of these is the awaited expansion to the MMO with a lot of the ‘improvements’ shown in the vision mentioned here. Right from the get go, the first thing you’ll notice is the change to to the log-in screen which has been completely revamped, in addition to randomized with around six-in-total logins.

A preview of login.

The Cosmetic

If NCSoft has ever been good at anything, its been creating beautiful visuals in both character models and environments and they fully take advantage of the Crysis engine in this aspect. Moving forward from here, there are various changes to the character creation screen but something hardly used if you already have been playing since launch. They have also added a few animations to somewhat ‘enhance’ game play but one of these being semi-functional. They have added a change for the glide animations as well as a visible (and actual) increase in speed when holding forward.

The Instances

A preview of Haramel

Since 2.0 isn’t on the live servers, I had the fun of leveling up a character from zero to fifty-five. Thankfully, it was a x10 increased rate and it also gave me a chance to experience some of the newer instances. It would seem that they are trying to take some of the grind out of the game and expand the content of the game — which is somewhat impressive. Most of the content added are solo instances with a slight twist to them. The item and armor drops from the final boss are actually class specific — this meaning if you are a tank class, then you will get an appropriate armor type.
Drop rate wise its a bit hard to tell, but on the PTS I was granted 3/5 of the set with just one boss kill. Other good news is these instances are HUGE and also come complete with quests and repeatable inside (Hurray for Grindables). It seems the main focus of these areas is-to-level-you.

The Good

Overall, this is a exciting expansion with quite a few favorable additions. They’ve increased kinah gain from campaign quests as well as improved upon the mapping of quest NPCs on the map (for both available and turn ins) The quests are also color coded depending on what that quest is for and by level. These colors range from green, gray, yellow, red and blue. The pets seem to be a good addition as well — there are several different types. Some being purely cosmetic while other serve and actual function. There are pets to increase your storage, pets that give you rare minerals and jewels when fed (kinda like Phantasy Star) and others that are just purely cosmetic.

The Rage/Rant

For every positive, I would say that there are two complaints. There is a lot of things for NCSoft to finish before they actually roll this out onto shelves and the live servers. The user interface is more or less incomplete — many of the new options are inaccessible due to poorly sized windows and poor localization. Many of the added quests are still in Korean in addition to many UI elements such as the Broker and even enhancement menus. These are vital parts of the game that are more or less not usable even if you knew Korean. I’m also a little confused as to what NCSoft NA is doing with some of the ‘westernization’ of the game. In the two new pvp zones they have added a surplus of guards into what should be a open pvp area. (These guards aren’t there in the Korean or Chinese versions) As well as various nerfs to rifting, while these things may change.. it is pretty doubtful. It would almost seem as they’re trying to discourage PvP (In a PvP based game) in both new and old world content. Which to me, seems like its limiting its lifespan in a game that all they have going for them IS the PvP. PvE content is severely lacking and they’re basically shooting themselves in the foot with the addition to the pvp nerfs.

Will it be good, or will it be bad?
Thats still undecided since its still beta. Only time will tell. I plan to give it a fair chance but things for me are looking rather dim.

The entire Final Fantasy 14 community has been up in arms about a recent press release in regards to the Surplus XP system by game director Nobuaki Komoto . This Press release was not intended to be viewed by North American or European regions but rather has been translated by various communities and distributed via forums and Social networking. Many Gamers are outraged over the idea of the use of the system so much so that they are canceling their pre-order and telling others to follow suit.

Community leaders are currently not commenting on this and Square has yet to Post any response on the subject, avoiding conflict but at the same time allowing this rumor or fact to spread throughout the world. Some gamers are viewing this system as a positive for casual gamers with less then 15 hours a week to play, stating such things as ” I have a job, a family and other games to play I don’t care to dedicate more than 10-15 hours per week to this game.” The other side of this argument states that ” I’m paying for a service that should be unlimited, I used to play Final Fantasy 11 and it was unlimited so why change that system, you are only going to drive away your fans with this system.” Consumers state that since they are paying for the game and the service that they should be able to play as much as they want without some experience penalty that will in the long run destroy the community. Debate will continue to rage between both of the sides of the argument and its interpretation, and until Square steps in and clears the air with some clarity gamers will continue to lose faith in the game. We will continue to research this news and let you know if we can confirm or deny any of the current rumors or facts.

Below is a translated version of the release by community member Savalithos of the FFXIVCore.com:

We’d like to thank all the beta testers out there for their hard work and support! We’re applying all those ideas you’ve sent us to make for the best possible Open Beta test and official release.

Now we’d like to take a moment to answer the many questions we’ve received about character balance in the current B3 phase.

First off, the main concept behind FFXIV is allowing those players with little time on their hands to play effectively, and game balance is based off of that. Furthermore, it is being designed to not give those with more time on their hands to play an unfair advantage. Because of that, systems such as Guardian’s Favor (a bonus to Guildleves) have been implemented to make leveling in the short-term easier than leveling in the long-term.

To achieve this balance, the amount of possible skill/experience points earned after a certain period of time has a threshold. Think of it as real-life “fatigue” from working at improving your skills via battle *(aka. No one could train ad nauseam in the real world with no ill effects).

Within the first eight hours of play, you can earn 100% experience. The seven hour period following will see your possible experience gradually approach zero.

This system is on a weekly timer. After a week has passed since you began skilling that particular weapon, the timer will reset. It will start anew when you skill up again.

Any experience earned past that point is saved as “surplus.” There is surplus for each class, and if you begin to see it please consider playing another class and adjust accordingly.

However, experience points are not specific to any class and therefore the decrease in experience points is not affected by changing classes.

That’s how the system stands as of right now.

Also, this system wasn’t implemented just in B3 but was set in motion from the very start of beta. Despite this, we have received many opinions regarding it in B3. There are a few reasons why:

-B3 allowed for longer sessions in single sittings.
-In order to promote party play, skill/experience points earned were greatly increased.
-The skill/experience earned from weak enemies was lowered, but had failed to pop up on initial bug reports (and was later fixed via maintenance).

According to the last bug report skill/experience able to be earned was above what had been planned, therefore people hit the limit much more quickly than hoped for. That is the biggest cause. Yet another problem was that we were unable to adjust guildleve experience and the experience-earned limit at the same time.

Our lack of explanation regarding all of this was a mistake, and we heartily apologize.

This all is still currently under development, and we have plans to make the limit more palatable in answer to all the tester feedback we received concerning this. In particular we would like to address the speed with which experience begins to drop off and are already looking into it.
Also, since experience points fatigue carries over despite changing weapons, we plan to make it not so harsh.

At the very least, we promise to not have people hitting these limits in a short period of time, such as during the start of B3.

We would also like to make an announcement regarding something else.

The decrease in earnings when gathering is based on your actions taken with that class and is unrelated to the aforementioned limits. This is also currently under review and is planned for adjustment in accordance with many testers’ opinions.

Surplus experience is currently not being used. However, we have received many comments suggesting some sort of reward be put into effect regarding it, and we think that’s a pretty interesting idea. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, though, and we’re currently investigating the possibilities.

Open Beta will not just see changes to the issues stated above but will also see adjustments made to encourage party play even more (such as an increase to skill points), which the team is currently hard at work on adjusting. We hope you’ll all test it out when the time comes.

Finally, we would like to apologize for the lateness of any developer comments due to my attendance of Gamecom this past week. In my absence much fuss was raised over speculation, old information and some mistranslations on overseas fansites *(what?! /panic. Though I wonder what that’s in reference to in particular). I hope to avoid this from happening again by delivering developer comments as promptly as possible. Thank you all for your understanding.

And thanks in advance for your hard work to come in Open Beta!

Final Fantasy XIV director
Nobuaki Komoto

And Here is the North American Beta release post from The Beta page:

Once again, we would like to thank you all for your participation and support during the Closed Beta. We will continue to take your valuable feedback into consideration as we develop the game during Open Beta and even beyond the official release.

Now I would like to take a moment to respond to the many questions and opinions regarding the manner in and rates at which experience and skill points are obtained in Beta 3.

Firstly, the concept for FINAL FANTASY XIV was to design a system of character progression that offers meaningful advancement for those with limited time to dedicate to playing. We did not want to create a game that forced people to play for hours on end to see their efforts rewarded. To that end, in addition to the Guardian’s Aspect and guildleve systems, we introduced a means of apportioning swifter advancement to shorter periods of play.

In order to achieve this balance, we calculated a value for the amount of skill or experience points that could be earned in a one-hour period. This theoretical value represents an hour spent engaged solely in combat, levequests, or any other activities that earn skill or experience points, and sets a threshold delimiting how many of these points can be earned in a period of play.

Based on this, we have implemented a “threshold value” concept. These thresholds are regulated by a one-week timer that begins counting down the instant you earn skill/experience points. After a week has passed, the thresholds will reset, and the moment skill/experience points are earned again, the timer begins counting down anew.

For the first eight thresholds during this week-long period, players will receive skill/experience points at the maximum rate possible. The actual amount of time spent reaching these thresholds is not significant. That is to say, a player who exceeds eight hours of gameplay will still be rewarded the maximum amount of skill/experience points, so long as the total amount earned is below the eighth threshold value. For the subsequent seven thresholds, players will earn skill/experience points at a gradually decreasing rate, eventually reaching a rate of zero.

It is worth noting, however, that the reduced rate will also gradually recover while players are engaged in activities that do not yield skill/experience points. In this manner, it is possible for the threshold value to reset completely, even before the completion of the one-week timer.

Any skill points earned in excess of the threshold maximum—that is, at a rate of zero—will be stored as “bonus skill points.” These are specific to each class, so players limited to earning bonus skill points still have the freedom to change classes and begin earning skill points again at the maximum rate, allowing their reduced skill rates to recover in the meantime.

The experience point threshold, however, is unrelated to class, and switching classes will have no effect on the decreasing rate of earnable experience.

This is how the progression system currently works.

This system was not introduced in Beta 3, but has been in place since the beginning of beta testing. There are several reasons why many people believe that these features were only recently implemented:

- Leading into Beta 3, operation hours were extended, making it possible to play more often during the span of a week.
- To encourage players to form guidleve parties in Beta 3, skill and experience point rewards for guildleves were significantly increased.
- The process that reduced the amount of skill/experience points awarded for weak enemies attacking in groups was unintentionally removed at the start of Beta 3. (This issue has been addressed.)

That last reason in particular was the biggest cause for players running up against the threshold penalty, with characters earning far more skill/experience points than we anticipated. We also faced an issue where we were simultaneously unable to adjust the amount earned for guildleves as well as the effects of crossing each threshold.

We sincerely apologize for the lack of explanation and our failure to make the necessary adjustments in the game.

The threshold values are being reexamined, and we plan to further adjust the different rates of earnable points based on feedback from our testers. One of the top issues we are looking at right now is fixing the excessively rapid drop after crossing the eighth threshold. We also plan to improve experience point reduction rates, even more so than for skill points, considering the threshold is unaffected when changing class.

At the very least, we can promise that players won’t be running into the threshold penalty in the same short time span as they did in the beginning of Beta 3.

We would like to take this opportunity to also explain the following issues.

The diminishing results experienced during gathering are a function related to that class alone, and have no connection to this progression system. We are in the process of adjusting this system, and plan to make changes based on tester feedback.

We are currently in the process of considering the means in which bonus skill points can be used. There have been suggestions for various types of incentives, but as encouraging people to play with that in mind defeats the purpose of this threshold system, we will be examining this issue very carefully.

These are not the only adjustments we have planned for Open Beta. As mentioned previously, we are looking into increasing the amount of skill points earned when fighting in a party, and we look forward to seeing your input on these changes.

Last of all, I would like to apologize for the delay in releasing a developer’s comment due to my recent attendance to Gamescom. The article based on my interview during that trip, coupled with conjecture, outdated information, and some misunderstandings on overseas websites, only added to the confusion. In the future, I hope to avoid similar problems by responding directly through official developer’s comments as often as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

See you in the Open Beta Testing!
